Remove VDP appliance server from vCenter server environment


When you had a problem with your VDP appliance server and it’s not recoverable. The only solution is then to setup an new VDP server. But you will find always a trace in your vCenter web interface from the old VDP server.

You can uninstall vSphere Data Protection from vCenter Server:
Note: This deletes all of the vSphere Data Protection data, including existing backups that are stored inside the backup datastore. Do not perform these steps if you want to retain backup information.
  1. Power down the vSphere Data Protection appliance using the shutdown command (not power off).
  2. Remove any attached disks you want to keep from the appliance.
  3. Right-click the appliance and click Delete from disk.
  4. For ESXi 6.0 and later, enable the Managed Object Browser using the vSphere Web Client.

  5. Using the Managed Object Browser, remove the vSphere Data Protection plug-in from vCenter Server:
    1. Open https://vcenterip/mob in a web browser.

      where vcenterip is the IP address of the vCenter Server or vCenter Server appliance.

    2. When prompted, enter your vCenter Server credentials and log in.
    3. Click content > extensionmanager.
    4. Ensure that these details are present:

      For VDP 5.1: com.vmware.vdp
      For VDP 5.5/5.8/6.x: com.vmware.vdp2 and com.vmware.vdp2.config

    5. Click unregisterextension.
    6. In the text field provided enter:

      For VDP 5.1: com.vmware.vdp
      For VDP 5.5/5.8/6.x: com.vmware.vdp2  then com.vmware.vdp2.config

    7. Click Invoke Method to remove the plug-in.

      You see output similar to:

      Method Invocation Result: Void

      Note: This output confirms that the plug-in is removed. For vSphere Data Protection 5.5 and later, repeat this process to remove com.vmware.vdp2.config.

  6. Log out and log in to the vSphere Web Client.
  7. Ensure that the VDP plug-in is no longer visible in the vSphere Web Client home screen.

This procedure has worked perfectly for me.
